about

"The seven-minute title track builds pulsing Berlin School synths up to panic-attack levels of breathlessness, and the buzzsaw rhythms of 'Circular Forms' make up perhaps one of the finest ever musical evocations of brain-freezing anxiety. Heartfelt and affecting."
Bob Fischer, Electronic Sound Magazine, #101

Radio support from Kate Bosworth's Dark Train, Front & Follow's More Realistic Goals and Gareth Jones' Dandelion Radio.

Recorded live in a room with amps and room mics, minimal overdubs.

Coming of age in the desolate wasteland of Preston in Tory Britain, I devoured the likes of Kafka, Camus and Sarte - existential horror fueling my teenage angst.

I often used to feel like a hidden camera - like I was viewing the world I lived in as a non-participatory observer. I didn't feel part of this strange, awful world, I didn't want to be part of it either. Yet there I was, in a fixed position, made to observe it all.

Thankfully, as I grew older, the fog of this gloomy dislocation lifted somewhat.

But in the last few years, the barrage of the pandemic, climate catastrophe, economic depression, relentless social media and socio-political madness, that sense of Hidden Camera Syndrome has made a bit of a comeback.

To be fair, not all the album is as bleak as all that. Dream-like sounds outweigh the nightmares.

It's actually a pretty good album to fall asleep to. Hypnogogic.

Stylistically, this album veers into ambient territory, and leapfrogs the genuine joyousness of the Christmas Album, continuing in the vein of the "Through a Crack of Light" album that came out on Werra Foxma's SubClub (2022).

Most tracks are based on sequences played live through 4 synths at once and tweaked in real time. Reverb, delay and modulation effects through valve guitar amps and room mics were used to create an immersive atmosphere.

In addition to these live basics, the tracks were then given sparse overdubs, mostly with tuned percussion, electric guitar, and field recordings.

The influence of Japanese ambient music was even stronger on this album.

For the gear geeks: Korg Minilogue XD, Korg Monologue, Korg microkorg, Waldorf Streichfett, valve amps, effects pedals, Fender Mustang guitars, xylophone, glockenspiel, field recordings from Lancaster & Morecambe Bay, Mattel Bee Gees Rhythm Machine, Waddingtons Computatune, electronic tambura, Akai MPK Mini Play, Tibetan bells, gong, Stylophone Gen X.

about

Synthetic Villains Lancaster, UK

Instrumental, mostly electronic music.

From the "experimental, slightly off-kilter" (Bandcamp New & Notable) synth-pop of the debut album to the "pulsing Berlin School synths" (Electronic Sound Magazine) of the latest albums, SV albums explore drones, repetitions, textures and riffs.

The 3rd album is over on Werra Foxma's Sub Club.
